Funding concerns cloud vision for teachers

It was a regular Thursday morning lesson for physical education teacher Matt Byrne and his year 8 class, except that visual arts teacher Melanie Taylor was filming from the back corner.
The key quote is this, and it has an impossible challenge, to introduce a quality review system for the benefit of teachers and students with no dollars provided: "
Much of the focus this week has been on the proposed changes to university requirements, with teaching degrees for school leavers to be restricted to those who scored a minimum of three band fives, including English, in the HSC.
But the bulk of recommendations announced this week focus on strengthening teachers already in the system. These include formal teacher mentoring, structured professional development that is consistent across the board and the compulsory accreditation of all teachers, which sees performance reassessed every five years.
The proposals are championed by educators across the school sectors. But implementing them is going to be a challenge without significant increases to funding.
