It doesn’t take much knowledge of data-gathering techniques to realise that the obsession with broad-based testing is an expensive and unnecessary exercise. Without adding anything the educational process, we add immeasurably to the distortion of the curriculum and pedagogy through the impact of the test itself.
Like census processes, we would get better data from a smaller and more representative sample, while providing teachings with efficient and effective assessment tools that could give regular and speedy feedback.
Oh well, education was ever a political football.
