Port Campbell and home
Day 6 Took us from the Gable Car Park to Port Campbell, initially along the beach. This is a risky part of the trip as we had to beat the tide along Wreck Beach. Where beaches are dangerous, National Parks provide decision points to provide an alternative, but we wanted to walk the beach because Caz and Al had just done the walk and left us ‘photo clues’ for us to replicate, including one at Wreck Beach and at the Fiji Anchor. We were going pretty well and then we missed the beach exit, which was not well signposted, and walked around the point only to be swamped by the incoming tide. It was wet boots back to the beach where we were relieved to find the sign that took us back to the path.
There are over 150 wrecks on this coast, some of them still visible. We were glad not to join them and to get back to the inland trail, which ran along the cliffs until we were in sight of the 12 (or so) Apostles. From the visitors centre, we were collected to be taken into Port Campbell. The next morning we were on our way back to Apollow Bay to pick up the car and travel north to Ballarat.
It surely is the best preserved Goldfields town, with some stunning architecture from Victoria’s heyday. We had a brilliant meal in a renovated pub, as well as shopping for jumpers and things in a great shop. The next day we headed for Bendigo and the Elvis exhibition, before taking the back roads to Rutherglen and home after a night in one of the pubs.
